The number three is a very common magic symbol in many cultures. However, in Scandinavian context three multiplied by three might designate the nine worlds, which are united by the Yggdrasil tree. Also the symbol has no ending or beginning and this is the symbol of eternity. It is also believed that the symbol was used by the viking warriors as it would show way to Valhalla.
The pendant is large and looks like it has come from the Viking Age, truly a great gift for somebody who like Vikings.
